1An Unexpected Find
One afternoon, I noticed a bunch of keys lying on the floor outside my HDB lift. There was no one nearby, and I had no idea who they belonged to.
Residents in my block sometimes place found belongings near the letterboxes, so I initially considered doing the same. However, when I picked up the keys, I noticed a QR tag displaying the words:
“Lost & Found Tag—Scan to Return.”
2Is It Safe to Scan?
The tag appeared to provide a way to contact the owner, but I hesitated.
With online scams becoming increasingly common, I was reluctant to scan an unfamiliar QR code. I searched for EkTag online and read about how the service worked and how personal information was protected.
Feeling more confident, I decided to scan the tag.

The QR code opened an EkTag contact page offering three communication options:
- Call the owner
- Message the owner
- WhatsApp the owner
I preferred not to make a call, so I selected the WhatsApp option and sent a short message explaining that I had found the keys and was waiting near the letterbox area.
The finder can choose to remain anonymous, and no contact details will be shared with the owner.

Within moments, I received a reply:
“I’m on my way.”
Shortly afterwards, a gentleman approached me. To confirm that the keys belonged to him, he showed me the EkTag message on his phone.
He thanked me and collected his keys.

I had never experienced such a quick and convenient way of returning a lost item.
